Associate Membership

Open to National Orthoptic Associations who meet the following criteria:

  • have been in existence for a minimum of three (3) years
  • have no nationally recognised training school

or

  • have a training programme that is considered to be below the acceptable established standard recognised by the IOA for full membership

or

  • who fulfil the criteria for full membership but are unable to meet the financial obligations and special attendance duties of full membership


Associate member countries hold no voting privileges on the IOA council. They are required to nominate one of their members as a liaison with the council, this member may attend council meetings as an observer. The observer is permitted to speak to agenda topics; members of the associate member country have the right to vote at the AGM.

All members of their National Orthoptic Association will have access to the “members only” section of the IOA website.

All members of their National Orthoptic Association will receive a reduced registration fee (orthoptist IOA member fee) at the IOA congresses.

All members of  their National Orthoptic Association will receive a reduced subscription fee ($100 US) for the journals of “Binocular Vision and Ocular Motility” (JBVOM) and “Strabismus”.
