News from the president

Dear IOA Member,

You are reading my first quarterly newsletter for the IOA. Let me introduce myself. My name is Jan Roelof Polling, born and raised in the Netherlands. I became an orthoptist in 1998. After serving on the IOA Council of Management as the Dutch Representative, I was elected to serve as your next president of the IOA. I am succeeding Karen McMain who served this office from 2012 until June 2018. As your president, I have been working with the Council of Management to develop the IOA’s new strategic plan for 2019-2022. We plan to use these newsletters to keep you updated on this and all IOA business. To share relevant orthoptic ideas and important orthoptic news, please contact me via president@internationalorthoptics.org

IOA congress: Liverpool 2020

Welcome

We look forward to welcoming you to Liverpool and the UK for the 14^th International Orthoptic Association Congress.

The website for the congress in currently being finalised (www.ioacongress.org) and you will shortly be able to find information about the programme, registration, social events, accommodation and travel etc. In the meantime please save the date in your calendars for June 20^th – 23^rd 2020.

Key dates for the IOA Congress 2020:

Opening date early bird registration: Aug 16, 2019
Closing date of early bird registration: Mar 1, 2020
Abstract submission opens: Jun 1, 2019
Abstract submission closes: Dec 1, 2019
Deadline for author registration: March 1, 2020

Stephenson Honorary Fellow Award

It is with pleasure that I announce the recipient of the 2^nd Stephenson Honorary Fellow Award is Agneta Rydberg (Sweden).

The IOA Stephenson Honorary Fellow Award was instituted in 2015 in memory of Professor Gail Stephenson, former IOA Deputy President and Council member. Professor Stephenson devoted many hours of service to orthoptics nationally and internationally. She achieved great distinction for her commitment to orthoptic education and the development of the profession.

Agneta received her award on October 17, 2018 in Utrecht, the Netherlands where she attending the Orthoptistes de la Communauté Européenne (OCE) education committee. This committee is working to establish the European Diploma for orthoptics.

The IOA has a new website! We say goodbye to the old red and green format as we introduce our brand new design. Be sure to check out the website for yourself and share this wonderful news via Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. If you do not already follow us on social media, I would like to encourage you to get started.

I will be assisting the new IOA Webmaster, Eline de Jongh (the Netherlands) to update our website. We encourage you to email us if you notice any inconsistencies in website content or to share your innovating ideas.

IOA Member Benefit

The IOA is in collaboration with two scientific journals that are of interest to the international orthoptic community. As an IOA member, you are eligible to receive significantly reduced journal subscriptions for both Strabismus and Journal of Binocular Vision and Ocular Motility. You are invited to attend the 44th Annual General Meeting of the IOA.

Date: Friday, 16 November 2018
Time: 9:40 – 10:15 am
Location: Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant De Wageningsche Berg, Bosrandzaal Room

This meeting is open to all orthoptists who are members of associations which hold full or associate IOA membership status or orthoptists who are individual members of the IOA. Members who have fully paid dues as of the date of the AGM may vote. A complete list of full and associate member countries can be found on our website. Please pre-register for the AGM via the following link. If you are unable to attend there is a possibility to follow the AGM live via our YouTube Channel: stay tuned on Friday, 16 November 2018 from 9:40 – 10:15 am CET.
