About Us

The IOA comprises member countries where orthoptics is recognised by statute. Orthoptics is a profession allied to medicine.
Orthoptists are specially trained practioners who work in close co-operation with ophthalmologists (medical eye doctors).
The IOA recommends that patients with specific eye disorders e.g. Amblyopia (lazy eye), Strabismus (squint), eye movement disorders and other abnormalities of binocular function are best examined and treated by a qualified orthoptist in consultation with an ophthalmologist, neurologist and paediatrician.
